Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
I have always tried to teach you about this verse of what Faith is and according to the above verse real genuine faith has two aspects. It has substance and it has evidence.
Substance, since we are asking for God to intervene and the thing or things that we are asking for, the answers, have at that time not materialized then I need something concrete not abstract. That substance is the word of God and that word is forever fixed in the heavens. What I do when I have a problem is to find a scripture to hang on to and that word of God becomes my anchor in my storm. It is the life preserver that will keep me afloat until the answer comes.
The second thing is evidence, the substance was for us and the evidence is for God, He is looking to see if you will trust Him completely in this matter. We get so caught up with how much faith we have. Even to the point of guilt that we feel that if we would have had more faith maybe the person we were praying for wouldn’t have died. Remember that in Luke 17 Jesus is talking to the Disciples and he tells them if someone offends them in one day 7 times they were to forgive them. Now the disciples just like us tells Jesus that if He wanted them to forgive like that then He was going to have to increase their faith.
Listen to how Jesus answers them, Luke 17:6 The Lord said, "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. The Lord is telling us it is not how much faith that we have. The truth is it is who we have faith in. I can’t do anything because I don’t have the strength but my Lord does. The Lord is looking for people who want to trust Him in every detail.
Faith is not believing long enough, faith is aligning my beliefs with what God says. I used to fly weekly and we would practice what is called “touch and goes”. That means you take off get into the pattern and then land again and then immediately kick the airplane and take back off. I have done this time and time again. The one thing you learn about good landings is a good landing is not made at the point the wheels touch down, and good landing is made all the way back on the downwind leg of the landing. At that point you are still 1500 feet above the ground. But you must have the right speed and the right setting of flaps, the right altitude. If you don’t you could come in to hot or too short or even over shoot the run way.
I believe this is the same thing when we begin to pray with God in a tough situation or circumstance. The ability to stand started long before the problem got there. Day after day of trusting, waiting and learning to ascertain the leading of the Holy Spirit. You become so sensitive and you add to your faith, faith. So when all of sudden this storm shows up you are ready, no you are more than ready because you have found that God is real and He is close, so close that you can reach out and touch Him.
His promise to you and I is James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
